Voice Lessons

 My approach:

My focus is first and foremost to help students develop a secure, healthy vocal technique.

We do this by building awareness of the body: improving structural alignment and the breathing process, freeing the articulators from entanglements (e.g. tongue and jaw tension), and developing their vocal model(s) for appropriate and consistent resonance.

We then apply the developed technique to chosen repertoire, whether that be a classical art song, a musical theater number, or their favorite pop tune. We then work on improving diction, musicality, and performance skills.

Once we have established the foundations of basic vocal technique, vocal exercises and repertoire each take up about half the lesson. Students should regularly practice outside the lessons. Likewise, regular weekly lessons are important for vocal development.

Where I teach:

My studio is located on the ground floor of my home in Bloomington, MN, near the intersection of US 169 and Old Shakopee Road. The studio is entirely visible from the street through a large sliding glass patio door. I do have two wonderfully sweet cats, so my studio might not be a good fit for any student with a severe cat allergy.

Whom I teach:

I enjoy working with a wide variety of singers in terms of experience, age, and goals. Most of my students are interested in classical/choral or music theater performance, but I’ve worked with students in various commercial styles including pop, rock, and emo. Other students just want to feel more confident during communal singing. In general, the youngest students I work with are fifth or sixth graders. Absolute beginners are more than welcome!
